The froghead eel〔(Common names for ''Coloconger raniceps'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 (''Coloconger raniceps'') is an eel in the family Colocongridae (worm eels/short-tail eels).〔(''Coloconger raniceps'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 It was described by Alfred William Alcock in 1889.〔Alcock, A. W., 1889 (1 Dec.) (20525 ) ''Natural history notes from H. M. Indian marine survey steamer `Investigator,' Commander Alfred Carpenter, R. N., D. S. O., commanding.--No. 13. On the bathybial fishes of the Bay of Bengal and neighbouring waters, obtained during the seasons 1885-1889.'' Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 6) v. 4 (no. 24): 450-461.〕 It is a marine, deep-water dwelling eel which is known from the Indo-west Pacific, including East Africa, Madagascar, and southern Japan.〔 It dwells at a depth range of 300-1134 metres.
